2. It’s Psychologically Demanding

You will have to care for some very ill people and cope with difficult events. You’ll have to support patients, families and medical staff… sometimes all at once!

3. It’s Mentally Challenging

You will be learning new things every day. You will be assessing, intervening, and making quick decisions. You’ll have to pay attention because your decisions will have consequences.

4. It Can Be Demeaning

Patients can treat nurses as someone to wait on them. Doctors can be condescending. Management can make nurses feel expendable. You’ll have to let things roll off your back.

5. It Pays OK

Don’t go into the profession with the idea that you’ll be rich. You’ll make between $60,000 to $70,000 per year. As careers go, that’s a middle-of-the-road type of salary.

6. It Can Be Quite Rewarding

You may feel part of a community and enjoy your peers. When patients get better, you will feel a sense of accomplishment. You will know you can make a difference in peoples’ lives.

7. It Can Lead to Other Careers

Nurses learn valuable skills such as clinical knowledge, time management, and leadership. These can lead to other careers, such as teaching, and recruiting.
